THE BAD OF OBESITY

Introduction

Why are kids fatter today then how it used to be. People of all ages are getting fat, but is this just a sensation for right now or will the obesity level raise even more and more each year. Ever since we were little children we have followed in the shadows of our parents, but some of the things that we have learned aren’t the best for us in our futures. We know the foods that have been with us ever since we were young can follow us forever and if we don’t learn what is healthy and unhealthy for us it could lead to obesity later in our years. And this isn't our fault but it is our fault that we all aren't trying to fix the obesity level, biggest we don'w know actually how high it is, and that is why we all should take part in our nation and lets change lives today.

Our Report

There are many food options these days. The foods that we eat can get brought to us in two different ways, either your parents get the food for you or you can get your food for yourself, without your parents knowing what you are eating. Teens are not only the most likely to get fast food, but so are parents. The parents are another big factor in thriving on the fast food to get their children fed. Nutritionists and lawyers are trying their hardest to sue the companies that market and make what goes onto the people’s plates. But the companies that supply the food aren’t the only problem; there are so many other factors that come into effect when you talk about where the obesity starts. This could also start with genetics, but just because the obesity runs in the family doesn’t mean that the children will become that way. Other then the genetics, there could also be the way the family eats, which is a large reason of why people become overweight or obese. Lack of physical activity is another lead to obesity. According to kidshealth.org “two-thirds of infants and toddlers watch a screen an average of 2 hours a day”, “kids under age 6 watch an average of about 2 hours of screen media a day, primarily TV and videos or DVDs”, and “kids and teens 8 to 18 years spend nearly 4 hours a day in front of a TV screen and almost 2 additional hours on the computer (outside of schoolwork) and playing video games”. This shows that a lot of time that could be spent out being active and getting in shape is spent just sitting in a chair with no activity at all.

Can the cause be a part of a chain reaction with our adults being the starter of this awful epidemic or is it the children who rule over these parents. But the real question is who feeds who? Teenagers are making their own decisions for what they wear, who they talk to and what they eat now. And now it’s becoming a big problem for our obese rates. And now their parents aren't there to tell them what's from right and what is wrong when choosing foods.  Parents should be educating their children about what food is good and what food is bad for them, but the parents always don’t have time. So schools should start the food unit real young so that they can learn it before they go through the “rebelling age”. Knowing kids are always looking up to their parents, it could be hard for them to learn it because children do learn best from their parents. From the Open University in the platform they have stated that 20 years ago child obesity has became a national concern. And they are completely right! Children start at a young age and it goes by quick and if the children at taught at a younger age that sugar is a no-no, maybe it could help the obese rates lower. There always was a kid you knew that did only eat the veggies and fruit and never any sugar that because they knew it was bad just like swearing and hitting other people. Kids can learn young they will know the bad forever then and it may help this epidemic become less of a killer.

We are not the only things bounded by wrongs food labels and fast foods everywhere, people can obesity from different ways. It isn’t just the food that we eat these days it there are other factors that cause us humans to be the way we are today. At medicinenet.com in their obesity weight loss article they reported everyone has contributed factors to this obesity race. Starting with our genetics has changed our ways completely. People also completely just over eat the food that this world has. That just leads to lots of weight gain. If the person mostly just eats the bad food which is high in fat they could become obese also. But you could also get obese by mixing up your weight gain and loss by how often you eat. In some cases the overweight people eat less then normal weight people, and like normal people eat too much then over weight people. This can cause heath problems for their futures if they keep losing and gaining their weight back and forth. Also women are more likely to get obese more then men do because as women we have a slower metabolism and less muscle. So when muscle burns calories and fat in this case having a higher metabolism you will be less fat. It is also better to be active because you will burn the calories off, it may take a while and some work but it does happen. People think exercise is good because exercise gives you endorphins which happens to make people happy, and emotions are very important when it comes to eating because that influences eating habits in people. You could get sad, you could just be really bored, or stressed out and those people are bound to go to the cupboard and eat something.  Even medicines of depression also are a factor in peoples eating habits. So as you can tell it doesn’t just have to be your parents genetics to make you become obese, everyone can become obese no matter who you are and it all starts with what you eat.

There are so many foods that are offered to people that are bad for their bodies, but we need to know what is in the food that makes it bad, and what we can do to make it healthier for us. A lot of the things that we don’t see in the food are what the worst is for us. X-Ray technician schools said “Foods made of mostly white flour are just empty calories and carbohydrates” and “canned foods, those that are soaking in sugary syrup, like baked beans, are high in refined sugars and contribute to many health problems”. These are the things that people need to look for because that is what is making the country obese, the things that are hidden from out eyes. X-Ray technician schools also said “Everything you consume can have positive or negative health consequences, including drinks. While many people are conscious about the food they eat, they forget about the liquid calories in their diet”. Even though people take diets on what they eat, they forget about the drinks that they consume. These can have up to the same amount of calories and other hidden things that the foods we eat normally do. Knowing more then what is shown on a nutrition label now, could be a lot more help to people’s health. Knowing these hidden add-ins could let everyone know exactly what they are eating, and can choose the healthier foods to eat from there. Thinking about more then just what’s on the label could change the rate of obesity dramatically.

If were complaining about how we look everyday or how we are ashamed of eating the wrong things why don’t we do something about it. We need to change our lifestyle by making it a healthier lifestyle.  We should change our eating habits. We got to make sure our food intake is balanced with the right amount of food groups. When people buy junk food they’re going to eat because they have it in their home. When there’s healthy food in their home, they don’t have the temptations of eating junk food because it’s not available. We also need to learn how to control portion sizes. If you eat as much as you want without measuring out the right portions you will be taking in more calories you’re your body can burn in one day. When our body takes in to many calories and doesn’t burn them off it causes weight gain.  Having a healthy lifestyle includes daily exercise. There’s a lot of ways you can exercise. Just getting the right amount of exercise you’ll have your weight down to a healthy weight for your body and age. There are simple things you can do for exercise like taking your dog for a walk. Motivation is another thing you need to stick to your plan. You could join classes that have to do with nutrition and daily exercise. If you don’t think you could do this all on your own have someone in your family join you. Having someone else who is trying to change their life style with you will motivate you to change your lifestyle to a healthy lifestyle too.

In the first graph we asked 24 students in 5th hour English9 where they think the obesity starts. Does it start with the food or the parents? We found that more students think it starts with the parents.

In the second graph we asked the same 24 students in 5th hour English9 if their parents watched the food they ate daily. We found that a larger amount of the student’s parents do not watch what they eat on a daily basis.

Conclusion

Even though obesity rates are higher then they have ever been before, people aren’t thinking of what they could do to change it. Knowing all the factors that come into play of where the obesity starts and who causes it, makes a huge difference on how people think of it. The things that kids have learned to do from their parents will follow them through all the choices they make in their life. Even though some will change and make the choices they want without thinking of their parents, some will acknowledge what they learned from them, and take it into consideration. Kids that have learned unhealthy eating habits are more likely to keep eating that way throughout their lives and maybe even pass it on to later generations. This will just make obesity grow faster. But, the kids who learned healthy habits have a higher likely to stay healthy and also pass that on as well. If parents knew what they were doing to their children childhood and even their futures, they may think that they are making the wrong choice and change theirs and their child’s ways. Everyone has a chance to change their life to a healthier one, but who will make the difference and change obesity everywhere.
